Judge George McCarthy

Since 2013, he has been a common pleas judge and very involved in the community and with supporting veterans.  In 2015, he established the Athens County Veterans Treatment Court (VTC) which acts as a lifeline, offering veterans a path toward rehabilitation rather than simple punitive measures.

As co-founder of the Athens Area Stand Down, he helps to provide essential resources to veterans facing homelessness. He serves on the Ohio Attorney General’s Veterans Courts and Military Affairs Subcommittee and as a Patriot Guard Rider escorting veterans to their final resting place.   He is also with Heroes Haven for Veterans, a non-profit seeking to help veterans with emergency and temporary housing.

As a former Kiwanis Club President, and as a founding father of the Athens Sandlot youth baseball and softball program, he has help shaped the lives of countless youth. Whether on the Ohio Court Technology Committee as a co-chair or with Athens Veterans Banner Project honoring local heroes, he regularly volunteers to worthy causes. He also serves on the board of the Traumatic Brain Injury Foundation which focuses on student mental health wellness and suicide prevention.

He is a volunteer firefighter with 28 years of service.

Before being judge, he was as an attorney in private practice, and also volunteered at the poverty law clinic. He also chaired the Athens County Domestic Violence Task Force for a decade.
